Patients blinded by private providers Netcare

Three patients blinded after treatment from one of the government's new private providers - are the safeguards enough?

Their procedures led to three people losing their sight in what should have been routine cataract operations. But that didn't stop Netcare - a South African private health provider - from winning a further multi-million pound NHS contract to carry out more operations.

Netcare is a key partner in the government's strategy to cut waiting lists by using private firms to carry out routine surgery.

But with fifteen percent of all operations to be performed by the private sector - who is monitoring the companies responsible for our wellbeing? Our health correspondent, Victoria Macdonald, has spoken to Netcare's former medical director - who told her of his concerns.

This report contains surgical images which some viewers may find distressing.
